Meeting Notes – April 3rd   Leave a comment

This evening we had our first script club meeting! The format was that members bring scripts, ideas or questions and we work through them as a group. We took a good look at some scripts that have been used for provisioning new user accounts and generating wiki documentation from PowerShell MAML help. We also work through some snippets involving hash tables and advanced functions. We also took at a look at some ways to produce GUIs in PowerShell. This included a quick look at Windows Forms, ShowUI and Primal Forms. Below are some of the snippets from tonight’s meeting.

If you’re interested in joining, feel free to show up on the first Tuesday of the month. If you have any questions about the group or the scripts posted below, please email the group using the Google Group.

Script Club Meeting – April 3rd   Leave a comment

Rather than following the presentation format that we have been doing, we are going to hold a script club style meeting! Please bring a script that you’d like to discuss and look through as a group. Adam will bring a few scripts to show off to the group and work through. Feel free to bring scripts that you are working on at work or in your free time.

Looking for interesting scripts?

The meeting will start at 5:30 and go as long as people want to stay. We will be meeting at Wipfli as always. Hope to see you there!

February Meeting Notes   Leave a comment

Today we welcomed Steve Murawski from the Milwaukee Script Club. He presented on admin tools for free. We ran through some of the basic functionality that administrators can use that is built right into PowerShell. Rather than having a script sharing session, Steve presented for over an hour and half with a ton of great information. Thanks Steve for a great presentation!!

Steve runs the Milwaukee Script Club so if you are in the area, feel free to join them on every third Tuesday.

Links from the meeting

Statistics:

  • 7 Attendees in Person
  • 3 Attendees online
  • We spent about 20 minutes chatting and had a short announcements section
  • The presentation ran for 1 hour and 41 minutes

We had some issues with video during the meeting. We will try to correct this for future meetings. We did record this meeting but the video in the recording experienced the same issues that we had with video during the LiveMeeting. If you want to attempt to watch the video feel free to check it out here.

Our next meeting is scheduled for March 6th. We may adjust this date to coincide with the International PowerShell User Group day so stay tuned for that information!

Update: Steve Murawski will be presenting next week   Leave a comment

Unfortunately, Richard will not be able to join us next week. Fortunately, we will welcome Steve Murawski to the Madison PowerShell User Group. We hope that Richard will be able to join us in the future but are excited to have Steve present. Steve will cover the same topic at the same time and place as Richard. We will still be remote-capable and broadcast the meeting with the LiveMeeting information previously provided.  See you next Tuesday!

About Steve Murawski:

I’m a Senior Windows System Engineer for Edgenet and a Microsoft MVP in PowerShell.  In this role, I support a dynamic infrastructure that pushes the boundaries of the Windows platform.  PowerShell allows me to support this infrastructure in a more consistent and efficient manner.

I’m an advocate for PowerShell, as I believe it encourages administrative best practices and allows developers to provide additional access to their applications, without needing to explicitly write code for each administrative feature. Part of my advocacy for PowerShell includes my blog, appearances on various podcasts, and involvement with local user groups (Greater Milwaukee Script Club, and the Greater Milwaukee IT Pro User Community).

February 7th – Richard Siddaway presents PowerShell – Admin tools for free   1 comment

UPDATE: Richard is unable to attend! We will be welcoming Steven Murawski of the Milwaukee Script Club! We hope to have Richard join us sometime later this year.

Coming in February: We will be welcoming Richard Siddaway!

Presentation:

The session will cover the administrative tasks that can be performed using just the tools that install with PowerShell v2. This will cover the cmdlets, some simple scripts and a quick look at WMI. At the end of the session you will have a grasp of the breadth of tasks PowerShell can accomplish, some sample scripts to start building your own library and a view on where to go next.

Presenter: Richard Siddaway
Bio:
I have been working with Microsoft technologies for over 22 years having spent time in most IT roles including analyst-programmer, server administration, support, DBA and architect.  I have been interested in automation techniques (including automating job creation and submission on mainframes many years ago!).  I have been using VBScript and WMI since it became available on NT 4.  PowerShell caught my interest when I first heard about it and I have been using it since the early beta versions.  My blog is mainly about PowerShell.  I founded and run the UK PowerShell user Group and I am a PowerShell MVP.  I have given numerous talks on PowerShell at various events in the UK, Europe and the USA. I am a frequent speaker for PowerShell user groups worldwide. I have had a number of articles on PowerShell published including expert commentary’s on the Microsoft Scripting Games for which I have been a judge for the last two years.. PowerShell in Practice (Manning) was published in June 2010 and I am currently finishing PowerShell and WMI (Manning) to be published in 2012. A further title PowerShell in Depth will be published towards the end of 2012.
